Kathy Kasic, SNHF Alum Joins MSU SFP Faculty for AY 2012-13
Kathy Kasic, a 2007 graduate of the MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking (SNHF) Program, will be joining the School of Film and Photography (SFP) as a non-tenure track faculty member for the 20112-13 academic. year.
Kathy has achieved a varied and distinguished career in film production since her graduation. She is a producer and camerawoman for documentary films and television programs. She began her career as a biologist recording the sound of frog vocalizations in the Ecuadorian Amazon and Panama. Since then she has worked on a diverse range of productions from traditional natural history programs to independent, non-traditional science and social documentaries.
Kathy's work has been featured on BBC, National Geographic, PBS, History Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, CBS, and NPR. Her film,The Fishman, received over 6 million viewers on BBC and was produced for the BBC as part of the award winning 3-part series titled, Yellowstone. The Fishman won an award at the International Wildlife Film Festival, was nominated at the Banff Mountain Film Festival and Wildscreen, and screened at Telluride Mountain Film Festival. Her work on BBC's Yellowstone series gathered numerous accolades including a BAFTA and two Emmy nominations, as well as being BBC's highest-rated natural history documentary in over five years. Kathy has just finished work on a 7-part television series about the wildlife of North America for the Discovery Channel, a follow-up series to Planet Earth.
In addition to her freelance projects, Kathy is currently in production on a documentary about a Native American cowboy poet. Kathy is also an internationally published biologist and holds an MS in Biology as well as the MFA in SNHF. At MSU, she will be teaching courses in Advanced Cinematography, Graduate Production Management, Aesthetics of Film Production, and Non-Fiction Film Production.
