Welcome to the Department of Media & Theatre Arts!

Our department provides a curriculum for students seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Media & Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Motion Picture/Video/Theatre or Photography, and the world's first Master of Fine Arts in Science & Natural History Filmmaking.

Located in the Visual Communications Building, also home to KUSM, Montana PBS, we offer excellent laboratories, studios, and state of the art facilities. The department presents four stage productions annually in the Black Box Theater on the corner of 11 Street & Grant adjacent to the Visual Communications Building. This brand new 200-seat theater has balcony and projection capability, an events lobby, box office, set construction, storage, loading facilities, costume construction and storage, green room and dressing rooms. We proudly maintain a high academic standard by offering challenging educational programs in a positive and engaging environment. Our students have the opportunity to collaborate with our faculty to gain valuable experience in preparation for professions in film, photography, television, and theatre. Our programs emphasize learning through experience by spending many hours in production and state of the art labs. Through the years, the department has established a national reputation as a center where young people successfully prepare for careers in their chosen area of specialization.

The goal of Department of Media & Theatre Arts (MTA) is to dedicate itself to excellence in instruction in order to prepare our students for unique career opportunities. The department works to further increase our reputation by graduating academically qualified students, by encouraging student and faculty production and development, and by promoting the success of specific outreach programs affiliated to the department (i.e. Montana Shakespeare in the Parks and Hatchfest).

In order to preserve the highest quality of education for our students, GPA gates based on performance in freshman courses are implemented allowing only a limited number of students to continue in both our Photography and MPVT program.

We invite you explore our web site in order to investigate the three programs in more detail. For more information or to arrange a campus visit, please do not hesitate to contact us at mta@montana.edu or call (406) 994-2484.
