Chemical Policy Regarding Wet Darkroom
Use
NOTE:
There is an eye wash fountain and fire extinguisher
in the hallway near photo checkout.
There is a first aid kit at photo checkout.
Because photo chemicals are sensitizing substances—meaning
repeated exposure can ultimately result in permanent allergic reactions—we are
instituting stricter policies in the MTA department for your own protection.
1. Do not under any circumstances place your
hands in the chemistry. Tongs are
provided for that, as well as nitrile gloves at
checkout for a nominal fee of 10 cents a pair.
If you are seen to be putting your
hands into the chemistry you will be given one warning; with a second
infraction you will be removed from the darkroom.
2. Do not bring
food or drink into the wet darkroom. We have a user-friendly VCB lounge for
that down the hall.
3. If you put any
chemical in a tray in either the gang labs or the individual advanced labs, the
tray must be labeled. Labels
and sharpies available at checkout.
4. Personal chemical containers must be properly labeled. If
you choose to use/mix your own chemicals, please make sure you label your
containers with the following information: Your name, date of mixture, chemical
contents, and safety precautions/information.
Please note that abbreviations may not be used. Please use jugs intended for chemistry and
not milk jugs etc. All containers must have a tight closing lid.
(MTA 103 students are not allowed to
use/mix their own chemicals)
5. Please familiarize
yourself with the chemistry Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s).
These are available at photo checkout and posted at the entrance of each lab
area.
6. All chemical containers in the photo lab, including film
fix recycling jugs, must remain covered at all times.

SPILLS TO PHOTO CHECKOUT RIGHT AWAY!
