The Fred Gerber Scholarship in the Creative Art of Television
Fred L. Gerber, born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, recieved his PhB and MA from the
University of Wisconsin in 1947. He headed the Film and Television Department
of Montana State University from 1961 to 1982. He passed away of cancer in
1987. The endowment was established in 1983 by Dr. Karl Schlicher a colleague
and friend.
Fred also held positions in the TV Department at University of Wisconsin, Indiana
University and UCLA. During WWII, he served in the Army as an entertainment
director. He worked in TV productions at CBS in 1945 and was a freelance radio
and TV scriptwriter. He received a national Sigma Delta Chi journalism award
and was a member of National Association of Educational Broadcasters, University
Film Producers Association, Nation Association of Broadcasters and American
Association of University Professors.
The conference room in the Visual Communications Building is dedicated in the
memory of Fred L. Gerber. His service enabled the department
to grow from 3 faculty and 25 students to a robust curriculum with 10 faculty
and 270 majors
at the time of his retirement in 1982. In addition, the approval and funding
of the VCB was a major accomplishment during his tenure.
He is fondly remembered for his deep concern for the students and faculty
of the Film and Television Department.
