Jack Hyyppa
Jack Hyyppa
Professor Emeritus of Media Theatre & Arts
Achievements:
In 1984, Jack Hyyppa was the Director of the Film and Television
Services Center, and an Associate Professor of Film and Video Production.
At that time,
he agreed to become the Manager of KUSM, and to convert the Center into a
broadcast television station. Jack led his small staff through retraining in
both the
technical and the procedural operations of the new, non-commercial, station.
He has remained the Manager of KUSM for its entire 22-year history, as well
as continuing to serve on the MSU faculty.
Jack was committed to keeping
KUSM closely tied to the Media and Theatre Arts Department. KUSM is perhaps
the
only PBS station in the nation where students are required to participate
in its operation. This station is an integral part of the education of students,
and serves as an active laboratory for their experience. It was Jack’s
vision that spurred the Board of Regents to insist that MSU and the University
of Montana collaborate, joining KUSM and KUFM-TV into MontanaPBS.
Jack has
been the station representative to the Friends of MontanaPBS Board for
22 years. He remains an active producer of programs for the station, frequently
directing
studio or remote productions, or acting as an Executive Producer.
He
serves on many University committees, is on the Board of Directors of the
Montana Broadcasters Association, and you will occasionally see him on the
air
during
membership campaigns for MontanaPBS.
Jack will be retiring from KUSM in July of 2006 but will remain on the MTA
faculty teaching classes in Studio TV Production and working with Senior and
Graduate Students on their thesis films.
