Congratulations to Rick Smith as he has been awarded a prestigious Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting Fellowship to attend a week-long marine and environmental science workshop at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography! Additionally, his film " Fish and Cow", co-produced with Geoff Stephens, won the Montana Filmmaker award at the International Wildlife Film Festival.  (06/06/08)

Please join us in congratulating Walter Metz as he has been selected as a recipient of the 2007-2008 James and Mary Ross Provost's Award for Excellence. This prestigious award was established to recognize excellence in teaching, scholarship, and dedication to students at Montana State University. "Certain Green", a film by Theo Lipfert, based on a story by Marjorie Sandor starring Johanna Prindiville and Jack Jelinski with music by Ilse Mari Lee won won both a Gold Medal and a Director's Choice at the Park City Film Music Festival. This film was produced with the assistance of the College of Art & Architecture of Montana State University. Read more.....

Rachel Cudmore, a senior in the photography program was selected to showcase her capstone project form last semester at the Franki Ro Gallery in Bozeman last June.

Works from Megan Thompson and Cale Hofferber were chosen to be exhibited at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO this May.  The title of the Show is "Edgy"and features works that are considered provocative, or pushing the envelope. Preview selections. (03/03/08)

Jefferson Beck's "Up a Creek" has been Officially Selected to be screened at the Eugene International Film Festival Oct. 4-6, 2007.

The film will also be screening a week from today at the Everglades IFF in South Africa. Bill Cumming, the central character in the film is a canoeist in the niche sport of canoe poling.  His skills have also been on display at a host of locations across the U.S. and Canada via the Walkerwater and National Paddling film festival traveling roadshows, and was nominated for an award at the Swansea Bay FF in Wales. The film was podcast as well this spring on Terra: The Nature of Our World, where it was downloaded by thousands of viewers. Enter "Up a Creek" in the SEARCH box to check the film!!

Other Awards given to Jefferson's "Up a Creek" include:Honorable Mention at the Waterwalker Film Festival and Travelling Roadshow, Canada; Nominated as Best Student Film at the Swansea Bay Film Festival, Wales; Official Selection at the Eugene International Film Festival, Everglades International Film Festival, South Africa National Paddling Film Festival and Travelling Roadshow, Lexington, KY

Ryan Fitzgibbons' "Kis-Ka-Dee" (09-07) took second place in the student/amateur category at the North American Assoc. for Environmental Education Film Festival!

Congratulations to Kelly Matheson and Maria (Tucker) Frostic of the MFA program for being awarded Fulbright Scholarships!! Kelly Matheson was awarded a Fulbright to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Maria (Tucker) Frostic was awarded a Fulbright to Iceland. 

The Fulbright Committee made a special note to the MFA program congratulating us on the quality of the filmmakers we are producing. (06-07)


Ed Watkins won three Telly Awards for “Beyond Road's End" for Yellowstone National Park: two silvers for  Videography/ Cinematography and Safety categories, and one Bronze Telly in the Student category.

Steph Mizstal’s Wunderland” received Honorable Mention at the International Wildlife Film Festival – 2007 and was accepted into the First Look Student Film Festival – 2007.   “Black Tale: The Whirling Disease Invaders,” won a Bronze Telly, an award for Best Editing at the Element 2 Film Festival, and was an official selection for Student Films Across America.  Her “Master Dowser” was also an official selection for the DC Shorts Film Festival, the Hi Line Documentary Film Festival, and Rural Route Film Festival.

Rich Smith's second year film, "The Flat Rock Club", won 3 bronze Telly's for non-broadcast fund-raising, low-budget, and cinematography/videography. (06-07)

Tom Winston's film, “Tracking the Pacific Fisher,” was a finalist in the International Wildlife Film Festival (Non-Broadcast, Newcomer and Student Categories) and an official selection of Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, the Earthdance Environmental Film Festival, and the American Conservation Film Festival.  His documentary project “The Mongolian Marmot” was also a semi-finalist in this year’s ACE/SILVERDOCS.

Elliott Kennerson's film, “Snowies”got a merit award for storytelling at IWFF and was accepted to the Rural Route FF.  He also received a fellowship at the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, URI Graduate School of Oceanography in Naragansett.

Dennis Aig's short dramatic film "KILLING SNAKES" will be shown in the Short Film Corner at Cannes and the feature-length documentary "DLAI LAMA RENAISSANCE" will be part of the American Independent Films Program at FilmFest-Munich. In addition, his work as head of the Media Lab on the Deep Gulf Wrecks Mission studying the scientific effects of the World War II-era shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico will be recognized Thursday May 17, 2007 in Washington D.C. by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) with the Award for Excellence in Partnering. Congratulations to Greg Edwards, a graduating 2007 MPVT major, has received one of the highly competitive Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Internships for this summer. These are prime awards, consisting of placement in a major company, accompanied by a $ 4,000 stipend, and supervised by the Academy. Greg was selected in the category "Emerging Television Technologies," and has been placed with RMR Partners. (05-07)

"Case and Crowbar" directed by Kyle Eaton, received the "Best Director" and "Best Acting" by an ensemble Award at the National undergraduate Collegiate Film Festival hosted by Columbia University. (05-07)

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Northwest Chapter recently announced that Gil Stober, an alumnus of our department, of Peak Recording & Sound, has been nominated for an Emmy® Award. Gil received the nomination for Individual Achievement in the Audio Category for his work with KUSM-TV, on the “11th & Grant With Eric Funk” program as Audio Engineer/Producer.

Stober has owned Peak Recording & Sound in Bozeman, Montana for almost 26 years. He provides recording services for musicians, television, films, commercials, and much more. He’s received recognition for his work on numerous Addy Award winning commercials, and songs that he’s recorded have hit the top twenty on the national music charts.

Gil is very proud to be a part of the fantastic team that produces the "11th & Grant With Eric Funk” program at KUSM-TV, Montana PBS. The series has already won an Emmy® for Graphic Design by Scott Sterling in 2006, and has also been nominated in 2007 for Arts/Entertainment Program/Special for Michael Ballard and Scott Sterling as Producers/Directors and under the Director category for Michael Ballard, Director.
